2025 SBE NEWSLETTER: FEF SBE Stories

Empowering Women, Building Economies

The Story of the FEF SBE Women Project

The Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable community development through the successful implementation of its Small Business Empowerment (SBE) Project, an initiative designed to equip individuals—particularly women and youth—with practical skills, business knowledge, and startup support to build viable livelihoods.

Since its inception, the SBE Project has emerged as one of FEF’s flagship empowerment programmes, contributing significantly to poverty reduction, job creation, and economic inclusion across communities where the Foundation operates.

THE ORIGIN OF THE SBE PROJECT

The SBE Project was established following extensive community engagement and needs assessments conducted by FEF. Dr. Peter Osezua (Dr. Frugal) had met some women hawking in the streets of FCT and also begging because they earned from the petty trading is never enough. This assessments revealed a recurring challenge: many women possessed resilience or strong interest to contribute economically but lacked the technical training, capital, and business wisdom required to transform their petty trading into sustainable income-generating ventures.

In response, FEF designed the SBE Women Project as a holistic empowerment model, focusing on business education, mentorship, and starter support to ensure long-term impact rather than short-term relief.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The SBE Project was created to:

  • Promote self-reliance and economic independence
  • Reduce unemployment and underemployment
  • Strengthen micro and small-scale enterprises
  • Encourage community-based production and services
  • Support women and youth as drivers of local economic growth
  • Foster dignity of labour and sustainable livelihoods

SBE Registration Reaches Kabusa, FCT: Women Hopeful but Cautious as FEF Steps In

The Small Business Empowerment (SBE) 2025 Project by the Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) is making waves across the Federal Capital Territory, reaching more communities in a determined effort to uplift petty traders and struggling women entrepreneurs. On a recent outreach to Kabusa — a rapidly growing community in the FCT — the FEF team began registering eligible women for the much-anticipated SBE grant and training program. The reception was warm, but not without a tinge of caution.

Many women in Kabusa expressed guarded optimism. “We’ve seen organizations come with promises,” said Amina Yusuf, a foodstuff trader in the area, “but after collecting names and details, they disappear. We hope FEF will be different.” Similar sentiments echoed across the gathering as dozens of women queued to complete their registration, balancing hope for change with the weight of past disappointments.

What makes the FEF SBE Project different, however, is its proven record of community impact, transparency, and continuity. Having successfully executed SBE programs in several parts of Nigeria — including Abuja, Edo, and Borno — FEF has demonstrated a deep commitment to its mission. Already, hundreds of women have received direct financial support and business training, and the Foundation’s growing collaboration with institutions like SMEDAN only adds to the credibility and reach of this year’s campaign.

As the registration drive continues, the women of Kabusa — many of whom survive by selling vegetables, second-hand clothes, or running small kiosks — now look forward with cautious hope. FEF is determined not just to register, but to walk with these women through empowerment, training, and transformation. “We’re not just here to take names,” said Grace Ojiji, a key project coordinator. “We’re here to invest in lives, and we intend to fulfill every promise made.”

With your support, FEF can reach more communities, empower more women, and restore faith where it has long been lost.

FEF Affirms Determination to Offer Grants to 500 Women Petty Traders in 2025 SBE, Advocates Support and Collaboration

The Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting 500 women petty traders through the 2025 Small Business Empowerment (SBE) Project. This initiative, set to take place in Lagos, Edo, Benue, and Abuja, aims to financially empower women in small-scale businesses by providing grants of ₦150,000 each to enable business expansion and sustainability.

FEF acknowledges that achieving this ambitious goal requires collective effort, and is therefore calling on corporate organisations, government agencies, NGOs, and individuals to support this mission. The foundation emphasised that economic empowerment for women is a vital step toward poverty alleviation and community development.

“We need you to achieve this, and we are determined that we can,” the foundation stated, reaffirming its dedication to transforming lives. FEF urges well-meaning individuals and organisations to partner, donate, and collaborate to make the SBE 2025 Project a success.

SBE 2025 – We Need All the Funds and Collaboration

The Small Business Empowerment (SBE) Project 2025 by the Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) is more than an initiative — it is a movement of hope, dignity, and resilience. Set to empower 500 women across Nigeria with startup grants, training, and mentorship, SBE 2025 is designed to lift families out of poverty, starting with the heartbeat of every home — the woman. But to achieve this dream, we need every hand on deck. We need all the funds and collaboration we can get.

Each woman selected for SBE 2025 represents a household that has known struggle — widows, petty traders, displaced persons, farmers, and market women — all determined to survive against the odds. Our goal is to provide each beneficiary with a grant of ₦150,000 alongside vital business training and financial literacy support. But this goal, though clear, is heavy. With limited donor funding and a growing demand for impact, we can’t do this alone.

This is a call to corporate organisations, NGOs, faith-based bodies, philanthropists, government agencies, and compassionate individuals to partner with us. Whether through financial donations, training support, media coverage, logistics, or even sponsorship of a single woman, your contribution is the fuel that drives this vision.

Let’s rewrite the stories of 500 women this year. Let’s ignite micro-economies across communities. Let’s build a legacy of empowerment that generations will remember. Partner with us. Donate today. Let’s make SBE 2025 a turning point.

SBE 2025: SMEDAN Partners Unlocking New Opportunities for Women Beneficiaries

In a strategic move to scale impact and drive financial empowerment for women across Nigeria, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has partnered with the Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) on the 2025 edition of the Small Business Empowerment (SBE) Project. This collaboration is set to offer participating women traders enhanced access to training, resources, and business development support beyond financial grants.

Following a series of productive meetings between FEF and SMEDAN’s leadership—including a recent engagement with SMEDAN’s FCT Coordinator, Mrs. Mary Kolawole—both organisations have agreed to jointly train and empower 500 women: 200 in the FCT, 200 in Lagos, and 100 in Edo State. These women, referred to as Nano Traders, represent a vital part of Nigeria’s informal economy, and the partnership aims to equip them with the tools needed to scale and sustain their businesses.

As part of the collaboration, SMEDAN will oversee tailored business training for the beneficiaries, covering entrepreneurship fundamentals, record-keeping, digital skills, and market access strategies. The training will take place in accessible locations across all regions, ensuring ease of participation for women from underrepresented and rural areas.

With this partnership, FEF’s SBE 2025 project takes a significant step forward in its goal to break the cycle of poverty for women petty traders. The Foundation expresses optimism that this partnership will not only enhance impact but also attract more corporate and individual donors to join the mission. As registration continues in April, FEF is calling on more stakeholders to support and collaborate towards building a future where women have the resources they need to thrive.

FEF Advances Partnership with SMEDAN for 2025 SBE Project

The Frugal Empowerment Foundation (FEF) continues to make strides in securing strategic partnerships for the 2025 Small Business Empowerment (SBE) Project, as it moves closer to providing grants and training for 500 women petty traders across multiple states.

On Friday, March 29, 2025, FEF had a productive meeting with the FCT Manager of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Mrs. Mary Kolawole, at their office in Abuja. Mr. Frugal, FEF’s Founder, was also present via phone, reinforcing FEF’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment. During the discussions, Mrs. Kolawole emphasized that FEF’s project objectives align with SMEDAN’s mandates, making them willing and ready to support the initiative in Abuja and other states where the project is being implemented.

She assured FEF that our proposal has been forwarded to the Director General’s office for review and approval, with a follow-up underway. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of building and maintaining a strong database to effectively track and support beneficiaries, ensuring long-term monitoring of their progress. She also highlighted that the women targeted for this initiative fall under the category of “Nano Traders”, a vital economic group, and expressed SMEDAN’s commitment to providing them with essential business training to enhance their success and sustainability.

Additionally, FEF was advised to keep SMEDAN informed about the registration process and the number of women enrolled. To ensure accessibility for beneficiaries across Abuja’s six geopolitical zones, including Abaji, Kuje, Kwali, and Karu, at least two training locations will be established to reduce transportation challenges.

A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for April 12, 2025, at SMEDAN’s office, with Mr. Frugal, Project Supervisor Mr. Chuks Ochei, and Coordinator Miss Grace Ojiji expected to attend. The SMEDAN team commended FEF for its impactful work and pledged ongoing support to ensure the project’s success.

This partnership marks another milestone in FEF’s mission to empower women, strengthen businesses, and uplift communities. As registration begins in April, we encourage corporate organizations, individuals, and NGOs to collaborate and support this life-changing initiative.
